Hmm, I tend to find Dolores' voice to be ABSOLUTELY unique. I'm not sure how to describe it. Anyhow, I would be surprised if another singer sounded just like her. I don't know if I can explain why you keep listening to them, but... you do anyways. Hmm

    Upcoming albums {Artist - LP title - Release Date}
    Delores O'Riordan - Are You Listening? - May 15th, 2007
    Wir Sind Helden - Soundso - May 25th, 2007
    The Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist - July 7th, 2007

This is rather an odd thread. Though I'd say it's cos of her voice cos Dolores' lyrics rather suck, the music is 90% of the time the same, the guitars are very uninteresting and dull, the basslines are that which anyone can do, though the drums aren't horrible they aren't great either. This said her voice is exceptional, it's the only thing brilliant about the band.

I agree that the voice is the distinguishing mark of the band.  But I also think this time you're too negative, Meg: in my opinion, there are many beautiful songs in the Cranberries' discography.  You're right when you say that lyrics are quite poor while guitars and basslines are trivial, but don't forget that some beautiful songs can be born from the easiest chords.  You don't always need virtuosity to come out with a great song.

Well their songs *do* tend to sound the same. That however doesn't mean I don't like them. I *love* To The Faithful Departed, I'm Still Remembering is my favorite Cranberries song and it's rather simple. All I'm saying is they don't change their style and the only time they did (TTFD) everyone hated them for it.

I know what you mean, Meg, when you say their songs are quite easy and tend to resemble each other, but this doesn't mean you don't like them.  It's the same for me.

I'm not sure that everyone hated TTFD because of the style change.  Personally, I loved that album, and I think it's better than Bury the Hatchet and WUASTC, which is the one I love least.  The problem with TTFD was that it came after what everybody (including me) considered a masterpiece, and it's always very difficult to cope with the expectations that follow a huge success.

I too love I'm Still Remembering!  Delicious in its simplicity.  Anyway, consider this peculiar thing: you say that you love TTFD notwithstanding (or rather because) it's not the typical Cranberries sound.  Nevertheless, among this album's songs, you mention I'm Still Remembering, which is probably the most close to the usual Cranberries sound!  Isn't it strange?  Anyway, my favourite song from TTFD is Free To Decide.

    That's exactly what I mean!!

TTFD is without a doubt my favorite album by them by far (though I'd say a few other albums by other bands might compete for my heart at first) and though I really adore EE, I'm not thrilled with NNTA. I think it got way more hype than it deserved (compared to the other albums). As for BTH I detest that album but Wake Up is my second favorite by the band just cos it's so simple and beautiful and reminds me of EE so much.

I thought every Cranberries fan was thrilled with NNTA!  In my opinion, it deserved that hype.  When it was released, it was something "different", so different that in a few weeks it created a multitude of fans who would recognize themselves in this new band (as a matter of fact, many European fans came to know the Cranberries through NNTA and discovered EE only later).  For most of us, in 1994, it was amazing to discover this new band through this album.  Fortunately for you, Meg, in 1994 you were definitely too young, so maybe now you don't appreciate NNTA as the people of my age do, because you discovered it when you already knew the band.

I don't detest anyone of their albums, I just love someone more than someone else.  Here's my ranking:

    1. No Need To Argue
    2. Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?
    3. To The Faithful Departed
    4. Bury The Hatchet
    5. Wake Up And Smell The Coffee

Warning to all the forum members: be careful not to take doLitsa's words too seriously.  She's affected by an acute form of Doloresmania, for which no cure has been found yet.  If you take a look at her site, www.myspace.com/dolitsastralprojection, you'll understand what I mean.  So, we're just going to support our Greek friend doLitsa, never contradicting her, because it could be detrimental to her health.  For example, in her presence, none of us should ever assert that some of Dolores' lyrics aren't that good or that Ordinary Day is just an ordinary song.

PS - Obviously, doLitsa, I'm just kidding.  Actually I like your genuine Doloresmania. Wink

I love her and the cranberries for that fact, because their lyrics and songs are actually about something. They sing about war, bosnia, all that stuff, that is sad to hear about, but means something. it's not just fluff lyrics to get by. and there music is complicated, i have all of their songbooks, and playing them on guitar and piano is difficult, even for a piano player for 15 years, and a guitar player of 3 years. so they are very credible musicians.

Lol nope not me. I'm not a NNTA fan.... at all. In fact I almost don't like the album cos of all the attention it got. I'm one of those people that hate to like popular things. Like I love Coldplay but I hate them cos they're popular. It's a curse but I can't help it.

I meant that as opposed to their other albums I detest it. I mean it's obviously better than any U2 album we'll hear. I'm sorry I can never resist poking fun at them.Big Smile

I would rank them like this:

    1. To the Faithful Departed 2. Wake Up and Smell the Coffee (the first album I got by them so it means something to me) 3. Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? 4. No Need to Argue
    5. Bury the Hatcet
