Hi everyone,

I was wondering if any of you caught Live Earth on the weekend?  I wasn't able to unfortunately... anyone see it (or part of it)?  Thoughts?  Highlights?

I caught just a few performances on TV: KT Tunstall (she's great!), Katie Melua (so cute, with her 9 million bicycles in Beijing), Metallica, Shakira, something of Duran Duran and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Thoughts:

1. The Cranberries weren't there, of course.  They couldn't have been there, as they don't exist anymore as a band.
2. Dolores wasn't there either.  She could have been there, as she does exist as a solo artist.  What a pity!
3. I hate to hear nonsense speeches about climate change and global warming:
• Those who know nothing about it (the common people like most of us all) talk about it as if they were scientists.
• The real scientists can't agree upon a common theory: some are sceptical, some are catastrophist.  Who do we have to believe?
• The politicians should seriously take into consideration what the scientists say, but they rather use either the sceptical or the catastrophist theory according to which one is more appropriate for their political position, thus reducing the problem to triviality.

Disenchanted conclusion: Live Earth has been the umpteenth huge festival event.  Nothing more.

I watched some of this so far, loved seeing Jack Johnson, David Gray/Damien Rice, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, Keane, Snow Patrol, and now my mind is blank. I still have a few hours to watch (tivo'd it), but it was good. Great idea, and all that, but from what I heard, there wasn't as much interest in it as they had hoped. Alas.

Can't beat the original Live Aid with Bono looking like a BABY singing his heart out. I'll never blow off seeing a show like this though, so many great artists in one (or more than one, in this case) location???? Thats a no-brainer.

I was meaning that it was a pity that Dolores didn't perform.  To be honest, I don't care too much about her two minute interview, which I think is the one posted by GregS (by the way, thank you for that, GregS).  I love Dolores and I consider her a very intelligent person, but I'm not very interested in what she thinks about climate change.  It's a delicate scientific matter, and I think any opinion coming from me, you, Dolores or whoever is just an opinion.

You can call me cynical, Meg (age makes people cynical, unfortunately!), but I'm only interested in a singer for what he/she does as a singer.  That's why, from my point of view, Dolores wasn't there.

PS - You know I like to discuss with you, Meg, so I'm always trying to disagree with you, hoping to get one more reply in exchange!

First off: I'm awfully sorry it's taken me so long to reply to this. I've been in the middle of a rather large move again (Florida to Virginia to be exact) and I've had so little time. Anyways, I actually do disagree with you on this one, lol! I think that if you have the kind of voice (figuratively speaking) that a singer has you should do something with it. Only few people get that kind of influence, because I honestly believe that music is an exremely powerful medium. They should respect that and try to make the world a better place. I agree that unless you're a scientist you might not completely understand why things are happening the way they are, but you still know that they're happening. People are dying of AIDS and we don't know exactly why (unless of course you want to buy into that "god is killing the gays" bullshit, which I highly doubt you'd do :D). However we do know that it is happening and that lots of innocent people are dying because of it. We can *want* to change it even if we can't, right? As for being cynical I understand that! I've had a "life is pointless, get used to it" outlook on life for quite some bit of time now. I don't think that the world will ever change and I don't believe it'll get better.I know it'll probably just get worse and worse, however it is better to die trying, right?

I think I'd better reply to you in a private message, I don't want to annoy the rest of the world (or at least the rest of the forum).

I saw a couple of performances, and I specially enjoyed some re-joined or old artists, such as Duran Duran, The Police, Bon Jovi, etc.

I might say that world's health isn't taken very seriously in my country, altough there are worse places... I at least do my part, and reject nylon bags, etcetera..
