Sanctuary Records closes; Dolores without a label?

The UK’s The Guardian reports today that Universal Music has decided to shut down the Sanctuary Records UK label, leaving Dolores O’Riordan without a record label.

This closure follows Sanctuary’s closing of its US division at the end of June.

Universal Music bought Sanctuary, which has been having financial struggles for the past few years, for 44.5 million pounds in August.

Universal said in a statement, “Sanctuary Records UK division will no longer continue as a stand-alone, frontline record label. Consultations with employees have begun to minimise redundancies as a result of the restructuring.”

I don't think this has been posted here before...which is surprising.

That has got to be a bummer for Dolores and a number of other acts. I'm sure if Dolores leaves Sanctuary...someone will sign her...she's to good to pass up.

Dolores isn't leaving Sanctuary, or better Universal, for the moment. A new news says that in November we'll know which artists will be in Universal. Dolores is waitingbut she is not happy for this problem. Anyway in November we'll know something.

I wish they'd hurry up and do something. are we going to get another single? Im still dying to hear those other b-sides. I hope they dont get locked up in storage like '7 years' did by The Cranberries. It would be such a shame.

yes its true. at least here in Greece...i talked to someone from sanctuary and he said that dolores moved to universal.

Well she'd have no choice but to go to Universal now... she can choose to find another label for the next album (if there's to be one).

 

but oh the irony... going back to universal. Just can't get away from those media giants now can you? I say go smashing pumpkins or radiohead on us and give away the next album...

Hahaha, that is so funny. Sorry, not to be mean but... ahahaha. And knowing Dolores I wouldn't count on another album for a *long* time anyways.

The news is pretty much the same, Dolores is without a record label. If you read the article at independent.ie in their music section, on her recent EBBA award, then you've heard. Here's what independent.ie had to say on 1/16/08 concerning Sanctuary Records.

"Ironically, the singer is currently without a contract as her previous record company Sanctuary no longer exist. It was taken over by music giant Universal, but Dolores has no contract with them."

My thoughts are I don't think Dolores will be without a label for very long. Her debut solo-album Are You Listening? has gone gold, selling close to 600,000 copies, she's won an EBBA  and now she's one of the nominees for Best Female Singer at the up and coming Meteor Ireland Music Awards.
